Poll: Mixed Results in Long Island Residents' Conservation Views

Submitted by Rachael Blair on Mon, 2008-05-12 14:03.
Long Island residents are willing to switch to energy-efficient light bulbs, but a recent poll shows most are unlikely to abandon their gas-guzzling SUVs or sedans. AM NY says the poll of 850 residents had mixed results, with nearly three-quarters of respondents saying they believe global warming is a reality but more than half felt they wouldn't be effected in their lifetime. While one-tenth of drivers would consider buying a hybrid and 14 percent would consider a compact, roughly two-thirds of drivers preferred their bigger, less fuel-efficient vehicles. The survey also found that over half of consumers with salaries over $100,000 per year would pay more on their electric bills if the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) developed large-scale solar and wind-power projects. Over 90 percent said they would choose an energy-efficient appliance over a cheaper but less efficient model.Over 90 percent said they would choose an energy-efficient appliance over a cheaper but less efficient model.
