Wind Power Overcomes Controversy In Sullivan County

Submitted by Michelle Subbiondo on Thu, 2008-05-08 14:18.
The Sullivan County Legislature has approved a lease agreement between its community college and Environmental Technologies, a private company that is looking to build a 111-foot tall wind turbine on the college's campus.

According to the Times Herald Record, the company will lease an acre of land at the college for $2,000 a year and will sell the wind power to the school at a reduced rate. At 111 feet, it would be the tallest turbine that Environmental Technologies has built.

Despite some protests from the local community, the college welcomes the opportunity to reduce their electric bills, which totaled about $500,000 of taxpayers' money last year. The college also plans to use the turbine in its new wind energy curriculum.
