The first step towards a new law that promises eco-friendly homes was taken by Islip yesterday April 9 reported the newsday news yesterday. The town board is planning to have a public hearing about using federal Energy Star standards that require builders to install multi-paned windows, extra insulation and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. These changes have already taken place in counties like Babylon, Brookhaven, and Riverhead. Many organizations and companies like the Long Island Power Authority have tried to explain that these laws will only help energy consumers. It will save money, curb consumers energy usage, and reduce greenhouse gases or emissions. The proposed resolution would mandate a training period from June to August for local builders, architects and members of the town's building department, Edwards said.A voluntary period would follow, from August to February 2009, when home builders could opt to comply with the new standards. Islip Councilman John Edwards, chairman of the town's energy committee, said: "I think it's something that's a little bit overdue." |
