The Long Island Regional Planning Board on Tuesday announced its intent to hire McKinsey & Company, the master planners behind the New York City's groundbreaking PlaNYC, as the lead consultant in the planning of the region's blueprint for the next 25 years.

According to Newsday, the board wants a "sustainability plan" to revive the region's sagging economy, rebuild its infrastructure, ease traffic and taxes as well as protect the environment, boost affordable housing, while also dealing with persisting woes of racial segregation, poverty and the exodus of Long Island's young people.

A final plan is expected to be completed early next year.
