Open-Space Advocates Object To Possible North Castle Land SaleSubmitted by Nana-Yaw Acheampong on Thu, 2008-03-20 18:08.
![]() Little things mean a lot. So say the neighbors and supporters of open-space that are upset with the Town of North Castle for considering selling a small parcel of open space. Opponents of the sale argue that this approximately 2-acre site is important land because it is part of a wildlife corridor. The land runs from the Westmoreland Sanctuary south to the DuBos property, which is owned by a developer but has been considered for preservation. Lohud.com reported that the corridors top predators in the areas food chain such as Coyotes and Bobcats have been seen for the first time in years. These predators use the corridor and a path behind houses to get to other large areas to hunt. "They're top predators in the food chain, and they need large areas," said Stephen Ricker, director of the Westmoreland Sanctuary. Supporters of the land sale argue that the parcel is not very accessible to the public and that the sale will help North Castle keep its AAA bond rating, which could help the town borrow money to acquire land that is more environmentally significant.
