The Indian Point nuclear power plantThe Indian Point nuclear power plantEnvironmental groups spent the final day of hearings on Indian Point's relicensing focusing on the nuclear power plant's impact on poor communities and impact on the Hudson River.

According to the Journal News, Riverkeeper argued that the 2.5 million gallons of water that the plant is allowed to reintroduce into the river is too much, leading to thermal pollution that harms marine life. Clearwater, another environmental group, asserted that the continued contamination of local groundwater supplies puts low-income populations in jeopardy.

The groups made their arguments before the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, which is considering relicensing Indian Point for 20 years. The three-judge panel is considering 100 arguments against the extension, and will decide which -- if any -- merit further study.
