Council Members de Blasio, Mealy and McMahon and Speaker Quinn announce new legislation on e-waste.The New York City Council and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have hammered out a compromise on electronics-waste recycling that will allow much of the initiative to go forward while avoiding a veto from the mayor.

According to the Daily News, the Council has separated legislation it passed last month into two bills. The first contains the basic elements that establish mandatory recycling of televisions, computers, portable digital music players and other devices. The mayor has agreed to sign this bill after the Council signs off, probably later this month.

The second bill contains the performance standards that the mayor has protested, including requirements that manufacturers recycle 25 percent of their city-sold products or face stiff fines. The mayor is expected to veto that bill, and the issue will later be resolved in the courts.

NYLCV has advocated for the creation of an electronics recycling program in New York City, and hopes that the state government will follow suit.
