Entergy, the owner of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, has issued a report on the sources of radioactive leaks in groundwater near the plant. Strontium 90 and tritium contamination had been reaching the Hudson River in small amounts, according to the company report. 

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, the Hudson River contamination was the result of a 50-gallon a day leak that existed from 1990 to 1992 when the plant was owned by ConEd. Entergy was aware of the leak at the time it purchased the nuclear plant. Another source, however, is more recent: hole in a fuel transfer canal at Indian Point 2 that has since been fixed.

The nuclear plant is seeking to extend its operating license through 2035, and the plant's impact on the environment are relevant in the application process. Because the radioactive leaks into the Hudson remain within federal levels, however, the leaks would not preclude a license extension.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has been closely monitoring Indian Point's groundwater contamination since it was first discovered in August 2005. Environmental groups, including Riverkeeper, have voiced continued concern about the amount of radioactivity reaching the Hudson River.
