Decision On Broadwater Delayed

The Broadwater LNG terminal would be located nine miles north of the coast of Riverhead.The Broadwater LNG terminal would be located nine miles north of the coast of Riverhead.Broadwater Energy and the New York Department of State have agreed on a two-month postponement on a decision of the terminal's environmental appropriateness. The decision had been expected next week.

According to Newsday, the Department of State indicated the decision was ""by mutual agrement...to allow for further discussion of what is a very complex proposal." Neither side would comment about specific concerns or reasons for the deadline extension beyond that.

Broadwater Energy is hoping to build a liquefied natural gas terminal on a ship-like vessel in Long Island Sound. Its construction and questions about its impact on the environment and its security have become the focus of a heated debate on Long Island.
