Communities Face Roadblocks On the Way Toward Climate ChangeSubmitted by Michelle Subbiondo on Thu, 2008-02-07 14:05.
All across the U.S. cities are constructing plans to cut carbon emissions and fight global warming, however, the lack of infrastructure in place to support green growth coupled with legal and budgetary concerns are causing substantial obstacles for climate action efforts. According to the New York Times, many homeowners have expressed interest in making their houses more energy efficient, though the added costs have made them shy away from such efforts. Most cities are eager to sign on to climate change initiatives but are having problems figuring out exactly how to implement them. In some places, like Cleveland, officials are finding their funds depleted due to a loss of population and industy in recent years. Also, communities are being bound by state laws concerning building standards and cannot require that houses' energy systems be upgraded when sold. In general, it seems evident that what works for one city will not necessarily work in another. Each city must set realistic goals, prioritize its efforts and lay out clear ways to finance and implement these changes if we are to fight the surmounting effects of global warming. |
