Sweeney Says "No" To BroadwaterSubmitted by Joshua Finkelstein on Thu, 2008-01-24 16:25.
According to Newsday, Assemb. Robert Sweeney(D-Lindenhurst), who is the chairman of the State Assembly's environmental committee, has voiced his opposition to LIPA's Broadwater LNG project in the Long Island Sound. Sweeney also stated that the project's environmental concerns were not adequately assessed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission While announcing his position Sweeney stated "While I understand and support efforts that will ensure our future energy needs will be met, I do not ... support any effort that will disrupt the fragile ecosystem of the Long Island Sound or potentially endanger the residents of Long Island." The Department of State and the Department of Environmental Conservation have until Feb. 12 to either grant or deny the necessary permits for Broadwater.
