Riverhead Landfill To Finally Be Closed

Submitted by Joshua Finkelstein on Thu, 2007-12-27 13:34.

Riverhead officials on Thursday night were expected to approve the closure of a troubled landfill that has cost the town over $40 million during the past 15 years, according to Newsday.

The Youngs Avenue landfill was ordered shut in 1993 by a state Supreme Court judge, and Riverhead has tried to reclaim the land by digging out recyclable materials. But the cleanup was far more complicated than expected, and the town now plans to cap the landfill at a cost of $7.4 million. The town is also suing the original consultants on the land reclamation.

On Thursday night, a hearing was also held on Riverhead Resorts' plan to create an entertainment complex, complete with an indoor ski mountain and a lake on a former Grumman site. Riverhead Resorts wants to purchase 755 acres of land and is prepared to pay $155 million in addition to future revenue sharing bonuses for the land.
