The Observer-Dispatch is reporting that Massachusetts based Mascoma Corp. is set to begin testing certain natural resources and their viability to be converted into alternative fuels at a planned Bio-refinery in Mohawk Valley's Rome, NY.

The company will not be using corn and instead is looking toward other resources to produce ethanol fuel, many of which are grown in New York State by farmers.

Mascoma has been a recipient of large investment by the state of New York. Leaders have also pledged financial assistance as well as numerous tax breaks and benefits if the plant proves viable. The plant is expected to create jobs, establish a link with research institutions through out the state such as Cornell and SUNY-ESF for continued research, and provide an economic boon for farmers in the region.

Mascoma has released plans for a demonstration plant to open in the Spring and if things go well a full-scale operation would soon follow.
