Bloomberg Allocates $80 Million for Green SpendingSubmitted by Jessica Greenbaum on Thu, 2007-12-06 12:22.
The New York Sun reports that despite recent budget cuts, the Bloomberg administration has announced plans to set aside 10% of the energy budget in the next decade and spend $80 million this year on efforts to reduce energy consumption and green house emissions. The initiative includes spending $35.3 million on new building lighting systems, $500,000 to string energy efficient lights on the Brooklyn Bridge, and $5 million to replace city cars with hybrids with an additional allocation of 20 GMC Yukon hybrids to the fire and police departments. As City operations and buildings alone account for 6.5% of New York's total energy use, the estimated emissions decrease of 34,000 tons annually coupled with the goal of 1.1 million tons by 2017, will provide a significant overall reduction in statewide energy consumption. |
