General Electric Embraces the Power of WindSubmitted by Jessica Greenbaum on Tue, 2007-11-20 17:54.
The Times Union reports that General Electric plans to confront and resolve wind power limitations by commissioning a host of studies at its Global Research Center in Niskayuna, NY. On a superficial level, wind turbines, which use a free natural resource to manufacture energy and produce zero carbon emissions, provide an obvious solution to the energy crisis; however, incorporating wind-powered electricity into a power grid presents a host of challenges, including the major issue of wind disruption. In order to accommodate periods of calm, the Independent System Operator requires the use of a backup system. The costly prospect of running and maintaining this duplicate investment necessitates the use of inefficient generators, which increase emissions. Wind power remains an essential aspect of GE's "Ecomagination Initiative," which involves employing cleaner technology, reducing greenhouse gases, and improving energy efficiency. Currently, researchers have proposed a comprehensive plan to reduce the impact of wind disruption and maximize the amount of wind in mild conditions by modulating blade length and weight and improving blade aerodynamics. These essential advancements will ensure that wind power provides a competitive and cleaner alternative to expensive and hazardous fossil fuels. |
