LI Residents Still Waiting for Cleanup of Toxic Gas Sites

Submitted by Michelle Subbiondo on Tue, 2007-11-13 14:45.

Months after assurances made by Pete Grannis, commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation, to cleanup utility gas-plant sites in Long Island, residents are still waiting to see results.

According to Newsday, a vow by Grannis to beef up staff at the primarily KeySpan/National Grid-owned sites has resulted in only one or two new employees working on manufactured-gas plant sites, a DEC staffer said in September. And regional DEC office involvement has been minimal, yet it still insists they are moving forward.

"I still have a fairly high level of frustration," said Janine DiNatale, a resident on the Bay Shore gas plume, particularly because the DEC and site owner do not have what she views as a viable plan to treat the plume that resides under scores of homes. Some residents are also concerned that the DEC may be undermining their attempts to have company funds pay the costs rather than taxpayers.
