Suffolk Legislature Majority Leader Jon Cooper Suffolk County legislators on Tuesday approved a ballot initiative that will let voters decide in November if they want to renew a quarter-cent sales tax for 17 more years, according to Newsday. The tax, which was championed by Legislator Jon Cooper, would allow Suffolk to borrow money to buy 33,000 acres of farmland and open space that would otherwise be developed. The ballot item will disclose that the initiative will allow the county to borrow up to $322 million against future sales taxes to purchase that land quickly. |
