Staten Island Site Eyed For Clean Energy Park

Submitted by Sabrina Gusmorino on Fri, 2007-08-03 16:23.

Staten Island Councilman Michael McMahon has revealed his ambitious plan to turn the 675-acre Chelsea Road site in Bloomfield, the largest piece of undeveloped land in New York City and previously slated to become the city's first NASCAR track, into a solar- and wind-generated power park.

McMahon displayed a thematic scheme of his vision for the site, which would include areas for solar power generation, offshore wind power farms and an amphitheater. He believes that if his plans go through, Staten Island's energy supply could be completely "homegrown."

According to McMahon, "green development" would also happily co-exist with the more than 200 acres of wetlands in the area.

"Attracting green businesses to New York City makes economic and environmental sense," said Eric A. Goldstein, Urban Program co-director for the Natural Resources Defense Council to the Staten Island Advance. "This is a great opportunity to further green technologies."
