Harrison Fights For Open SpaceSubmitted by Jessica Stein on Mon, 2007-07-23 11:22.
The Beaver Swamp Brook, a 15-acre site on the Harrison-Rye border, is looking a bit murky following a recent clean up. For years, the town of Harrison wanted to use the space to build a park, with a baseball and soccer field, playground, nature trail, open space, parking and some park buildings. The town cleaned the property -- at a cost of about $7 million, with state and federal money -- and added landfill where fields are planned. But to proceed, the town needs 10,000-15,000 cubic yards more of soil and a permit from the state Department of Environmental Conservation to grade and fill about 2 acres. The Journal News reports that the DEC will hold a public hearing on the project at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Harrison High School, 255 Union Ave. The town plans to use about five acres for active recreation with the remaining land preserved as open space. But some neighbors, including in nearby Rye, said the addition of fill has caused severe flooding. The city of Rye hired an environmental consultant and in April wrote a 25-page letter to the state requesting the project be halted until the town addressed flooding. |
