Concerns Raised Over Schuyler County Gravel Mine

Submitted by Sabrina Gusmorino on Fri, 2007-07-06 10:37.

Detailed environmental information is needed before the state can act on an application to expand a Town of Dix gravel mine, Schuyler County lawmakers said Thursday.

According to the Star Gazette, meeting in special session, legislators voted unanimously to ask the state Department of Environmental Conservation to require a draft environmental impact statement that would identify potential impacts of the Padua Gravel Pit expansion and how those impacts might be handled.

The county Legislature is not alone in being concerned about the application filed by It's Greener Now to expand the gravel mine operation on state Route 409 from 14 to 106 acres.

Since learning just in the past few weeks about It's Greener Now's intentions, the Dix Town Board and Watkins Glen Village Board have discussed the application and the local Environmental Management Council on Monday hosted a public forum to gather comments.
