Senate: No Taxation for Hybridization

Submitted by Josh Abram on Wed, 2007-06-06 16:55.

NYLCV joined Senator Dean Skelos in applauding the passage of a bill that would exempt hybrid cars and cars from model year 2008 that get at least 35 miles per gallon from the state sales tax. The bill adds another incentive to buying hybrid cars, which can significantly reduce a consumer's "carbon footprint."

The Assembly has yet to pass a copy of this bill and will need to do so before Governor Spitzer gets the chance to sign it into law. As the legislative session wraps up, this matter becomes increasingly urgent so consumers can have the extra incentive to purchase the more eco-friendly vehicles.

Hybrid cars are powered by both gasoline and electricity, so they achieve a higher fuel efficiency than most non-hybrid cars. They are currently one of the best technologies available for cutting fuel consumption when driving.
