Suozzi: Just Say "No"Submitted by Ilene Kaplowitz on Fri, 2007-03-30 11:15.
To toxic chemicals in food that is. Earlier this month, Suozzi debuted his "Healthy Nassau" vision in his state of the county address. As a follow up to that announcement, he has issued a request for bids from farmers who are willing to comply with the environmentally friendly rules of the Northeast Organic Farming Association. What do they get out of it? That's still not clear. Suozzi sees organic farming to be a vital component of making Nassau County the healthiest county in the nation. According to Newsday, Suozzi said, "You are what you eat, and organic produce is the best stuff you can eat." For those farmers who sign on, they will have to comply with the stringent organic farming rules, sell their produce at local farmers' markets, and give a percentage of the revenue back to the county. |
