Down With CasinosSubmitted by Stacy Feldman on Tue, 2007-03-27 11:01.
Ulster County is gearing up to support a bill that would prevent casinos from being built anywhere in the county, reports the Daily Freeman. The bill, sponsored by Kevin Cahill (D-Kingston), calls for Ulster County to be removed from the list of counties in which Spitzer can enter into compacts to establish casinos. In 2001, state legislation sanctioned the creation of six new casinos. Three have been authorized in the Catskills, one is already approved in Sullivan County, and Ulster is hell-bent on making sure that the other two don't land in its backyard. State Senator John Bonacic (R-Mount Hope) seems to think the bill is a total waste of time because Spitzer has given him his word: "Material players are allowing this to happen - the governor, my office, the county, the towns, if they don't want it, and they said they don't want it, it's never going to happen, so we don't need this legislation. If it ever became real I would jump right on it, but this is so remote from ever happening."
