Spitzer Jolts NYRISubmitted by Stacy Feldman on Thu, 2007-03-08 11:37.
Governor Spitzer told officials at New York Regional Interconnect (NYRI) that he will not meet with them until they produce a report detailing how their proposed 200-mile power transmission line will affect the state's power grid. A Spitzer spokesperson had this to say: "We've been asking for the report since mid-January. We're still waiting." Spitzer called the project "dead" during his campaign last year, but NYRI has been actively trying to revive the project. The company has been in Washington lobbying Senators Schumer and Clinton. Both have rebuffed NYRI's proposal and have urged officials to seek alternatives. This hard-line position by the senators is hardly surprising, given that the transmission line is wildly unpopular upstate. Residents and local pols argue that it will mar the upstate landscape while lowering electric rates downstate, benefiting New York City at their expense. |
