A Cry for Help on Tappan Zee Project

Submitted by Stacy Feldman on Wed, 2007-02-21 09:31.

The Journal News is reporting that Westchester County Exec Spano and Rockland County Exec Vanderhoef are urging Spitzer to intervene in the Tappan Zee Bridge rebuilding/replacing project.

The county executives wrote the letter after the project's team gave briefings to the media and the state legislature without first giving a preview to the citizen's advisory panel that the two set up. The team is under a mandate to get public input as part of the process. Spano and Vanderhoef said the project thus far lacks progress and focus and is confusing, unresponsive, and unreliable.

Spitzer's folks said in response: The governor will be actively engaged. Time will tell what that means. The Journal News interviewed Spitzer a few days ago. It's not clear what he's thinking of doing, but it is clear that he believes that building a bridge with a lifespan of 50 years is a bad idea.
