Spitzer on Board with Broadwater?Submitted by Stacy Feldman on Thu, 2007-02-15 13:01.
That's what Newsday is suggesting anyway. The paper quoted unnamed high-level sources who are "familiar with his thinking" as saying that Spitzer could end up backing the controversial proposal to build a 1200-foot liquefied natural gas platform on Long Island Sound. (Newsday's words: "One high-level government source is betting he will.") The official Spitzer line on Broadwater is that he is waiting for an analysis from the state Department of State before he weighs in. But according to Newsday sources, Spitzer sees some benefits to the project, namely its potential to lower consumer energy prices; build the local energy infrastructure; and add some competition to the regional natural gas market. In November, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued its draft environmental impact statement (EIS), which said that the project would cause little impact on the Sound. The EIS was criticized by DEC and the federal EPA for being "incomplete." New LIPA chairman Kevin Law has not taken a position on the matter. |
