Growth and development are critical and must be managed in a manner that does not overwhelm the ability of the environment to support the population. Sustainability seeks to marry economic growth with environmental protection.
Capital District policy makers have a long and largely successful history of preserving the vital waterways and open spaces that make the region unique. However, the Capital District has only begun to address other sustainability concerns, including the revitalization of older cities to encourage smart growth; the cleanup and reuse of former industrial sites; a patchwork mass transit system and development that continues to encroach on natural resources.
It is our hope that, through intelligent and forward-thinking planning, Capital District policy makers in Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady and Rensselaer local governments can address these problems and create communities that will be models of sustainability.
